THE THUNDER DRUM
SMALL, BUT WHAT A PERFORMANCE!
The Thunder Drum, also known as Thunder Tube, is a rather small percussion instrument, but it has a lot of power. It can literally bring on a real storm.
Just like the Frame Drums, the Thunder Drum belongs to the group of instruments called membranophones. This can be explained quite simply by its three-part construction: A tubular resonating body with an opening on one side, over which a membrane (drumhead) is stretched. In the center of the membrane is a freely suspended spring made of metal. If the thunder drum is carefully moved back and forth with the metal spiral pointing downward, the spiral begins to vibrate. The vibration of the oscillations is transferred via the resonator to the membrane, creating a deceptively real rumbling and thundering sound.
But that's not all the Thunder Drum can do. For example, lightning strikes can be produced by hitting the spring with a hard object (such as a stick or wooden mallet). You can elicit further eerie sounds from the Thunder Drum by rubbing the metal spiral.
With all the possibilities we should not forget that the Thunder Drum is a pure effect instrument, with which no rhythms can be played. Nevertheless, the Thunder Drum is widely used to record sound effects for film and radio. Also on stage, the Thunder Drum provides that little bit extra. Another conceivable use for the Thunder Drum is in schools and kindergartens, for example to provide a tonal underpinning and to build up tension during storytelling. The Thunder Drum does not necessarily have to be played by the narrator; the young listeners can also create the sounds that go with the story, because "playing" the Thunder Drum is foolproof. The robust plastic body decorated with pretty paintings makes the Meinl Sonic Energy Thunder Drums a durable construction for young and old.
Combined with the Meinl Sonic Energy Wave Drums and the Meinl Sonic Energy Rainsticks, you'll be well-equipped to imitate a variety of sounds from nature.
Meinl Sonic Energy is a collection of instruments that supports our connection to experience the body, mind and energy, as One. Many practitioners and guides within the health and wellness industry use these instruments therapeutically for stress management, anxiety relief, insomnia, depression, addictive recovery, pain management, etc. They are unique expressions of the vibrations we encounter on a daily basis and when listened to closely, seem to have a language all their own. They invite us to appreciate the definition of all things we find harmonious in our life and through this support, our journey begins toward new peace and restoration. Our collection of beautifully crafted creations makes self-discovery through sound a simple, profound practice.
